How to give IELTS writing feedback students actually act on

Short answer: IELTS writing correction and feedback work when they are short, ranked and followed by a task. Pick the two or three problems that hurt the essay most, show each one with evidence from the essay and a better version, then have the student rewrite those sentences and review them a week later.
Most teachers have handed back an essay covered in red ink and watched the student look at the band, then put it away. The problem is rarely the quality of the comments. It is that nothing asks the student to do anything with them.
This guide gives you a feedback routine you can use on the next set of essays.
Why do students ignore IELTS writing feedback?
Because there is too much of it, it is not ranked, and there is no task attached.
Too many points: twenty corrections tell the student everything matters, so nothing does.
No priority: a missing article and an unclear position look the same in red ink.
Codes without examples: “WW” (wrong word) tells a student where, not what to do instead.
No follow-up: if the next lesson moves on, the feedback was optional.
What makes IELTS writing feedback effective?
Effective feedback is selective, specific and acted on, in that order.
Selective means three to five points per essay, chosen by damage. Damage is how much a mistake gets in the way of the reader:
Damage level | Example | Give feedback? |
|---|---|---|
Blocking | No clear position in a “to what extent” essay | Always, first |
Limiting | Moreover used before a contrast | Yes, if it repeats or is in the top three |
Cosmetic | A slightly unnatural collocation | Only if nothing bigger is wrong |
Specific means the student can see the exact sentence and one better version. Acted on means a rewrite happens before the next essay.
How should you structure feedback on an IELTS essay?
Use the same short structure every time so students know where to look.
One thing that worked. Be precise: “Your second body paragraph explains the cause and then gives an example. Do that in every paragraph.”
The top problem, with evidence. Point to the sentence, name the problem in plain words, and give a better version.
Two or three further points, each with evidence from the essay and a fix.
One task. “Rewrite the three highlighted sentences before Thursday.”
Here is a short sample. The sentences are invented examples written for this article.
Evidence from the essay | Problem | Better version |
|---|---|---|
“There are many advantages and disadvantages of public transport.” | Position unclear (blocking) | “I largely agree that governments should prioritise public transport.” |
“Buses are cheaper. Moreover, many people prefer cars.” | Linker meaning (limiting) | “Buses are cheaper. However, many people prefer cars.” |
“It is good for economy.” | Article with a general noun (limiting) | “It is good for the economy.” |
Should you use correction codes for IELTS writing correction?
Codes are fine for cosmetic slips, but the top problems need a full explanation and an example.
Correction codes (or correction symbols) are short marks such as T for tense or Sp for spelling. They save time and push students to find the fix themselves. That works for things a student already knows, like a dropped plural. It does not work for problems they cannot yet see, like an undeveloped paragraph. Use codes for the long tail and full comments for the top three.
How do you make students act on feedback?
Build a rewrite into the lesson, and bring back anything they got wrong a week later.
Try this ten-minute routine at the start of the lesson after you return essays:
Students read only the top problem and the task, not the band.
They rewrite the highlighted sentences in their notebooks or a shared document.
Pairs swap and check one rewrite against your better version.
You collect the rewrites, or check three at random.
A week later, give each student a short worksheet with the items they still got wrong. Then check the next essay for the same problem type. If it is gone, say so. That moment is often what makes students read feedback next time.
What should an IELTS writing feedback sheet include?
A one-page sheet with a strength, the top problems with evidence and fixes, and a single task.
Section | What goes in it |
|---|---|
What worked | One specific strength to repeat |
Top problem | Evidence from the essay, the problem in plain words, a better version |
Further points (2–3) | Same format, ranked by damage |
Your task | One rewrite or practice task with a deadline |
Next essay check | The problem type you will look for next time |
If you also give a band, keep it separate and make clear it is your estimate against the public band descriptors (the criteria examiners use), not an official score. Our guide to marking IELTS writing faster covers how to do this without losing your weekend.
How does this connect to lesson planning?
Feedback tells individuals what to fix, and the patterns across the class tell you what to teach next.
When several students share the same top problem, it becomes next week’s lesson. Our pillar guide, Create IELTS lesson plans from the learners’ own mistakes, shows how to turn those patterns into a plan, and the Task 2 lesson plan is a worked example.
How can IELTS Laboratory help?
IELTS Laboratory (ielts-laboratory.co) is an independent online platform for IELTS teachers and learners that turns learners’ own Writing and Speaking mistakes into flashcards, lesson packs and practice. It is not affiliated with IELTS, the British Council, IDP or Cambridge.
Sol, our AI, marks each essay first, with band estimates and a flashcard for each mistake, and you check, edit or remove them. Each card carries an error code, so the Mistakes tab can rank a class’s mistakes by damage.
First and second drafts sit under one report link, so you and the student can see whether the rewrite fixed the problem.
Flashcards go into each learner’s own deck, and cards they miss come back sooner, which is the week-later review done for you.
Personal puzzles give each learner their own sentences of the chosen mistake types to rewrite.
You stay in charge of what the student sees. Nothing in the product is an official IELTS score.
FAQ
How much feedback should I give on one IELTS essay?
Three to five points, ranked by how much they hurt the reader. Put cosmetic slips on a worksheet rather than in the main feedback.
Should IELTS writing correction cover every mistake?
No. Correcting everything hides the problems that matter most. Correct the top few fully and use codes or worksheets for the rest.
Is a band score from an IELTS essay checker enough feedback?
Comments that lead to a task change writing. If you give a band, present it as your estimate against the public descriptors and keep it separate from the feedback.
How quickly should I return IELTS writing feedback?
Within a week if possible. After that, students have moved on and the rewrite feels like extra homework.
List your IELTS teaching where learners are looking
Teachers can list their teaching in the IELTS Laboratory directory, as part of building a fairer IELTS teaching ecosystem. Learners search for tutors, filter by currency and maximum price per hour, and message a tutor directly. The teacher plan is free until 1 December 2026, then $29 a month, with as many students as you like for General English, and when we connect you with a new student we take 15% of the lesson fee.
