Short answer: An IELTS error log is one of the most useful IELTS worksheets you can give a student: a short record of each student’s own mistakes, each written next to a better version and reviewed on a schedule. It works when it is small (only mistakes that matter), personal (the student’s own words) and reviewed again after a day, a week and a few weeks, so repeat mistakes are caught before the test.

Most teachers have seen it: the same article error, the same tense slip, corrected in essay after essay. Correction alone rarely fixes a habit. Recording it and returning to it often does.

What is an IELTS error log?

An error log is a table, kept by the student, that lists mistakes from their own writing and speaking with a corrected version and a note on when it was last checked.

It is not a grammar notebook. A grammar notebook stores rules; an error log stores the student’s own sentences. That difference matters, because students recognise and remember their own wording.

Why do the same IELTS mistakes keep coming back?

Because most errors in IELTS writing are habits, not gaps in knowledge, and habits need repeated, spaced practice to change.

Ask a student to explain the rule behind a repeated mistake and they often can. Under time pressure, though, the old pattern wins. Three things help:

  • Noticing the error in their own work, not in an exercise.

  • Producing the correct version, not just reading it.

  • Spacing the review, so the correction is recalled after some forgetting has happened.

What should an IELTS error log worksheet include?

Six columns are enough. More columns usually means the log stops being used.

Date

What I wrote or said

Better version

Type

Next review

Came back?

The sentences above are invented examples written for this article.

The Type column ranks how much damage the mistake does:

  • Blocking: the reader can’t follow the meaning, or the essay doesn’t answer the question.

  • Limiting: the meaning is clear, but the mistake holds the writing back, for example a repeated grammar error.

  • Cosmetic: a small slip that doesn’t affect understanding.

Students should log blocking and limiting mistakes first. A log full of cosmetic slips teaches students to worry about the wrong things.

How often should students review the error log?

Use a simple spaced schedule: the next day, a week later and about three weeks later.

Review

When

What the student does

First

Next day

Cover the “better version” column and rewrite each sentence

Second

One week later

Write a new sentence using the same pattern

Third

About three weeks later

Check the latest essay for that mistake

If the mistake came back, the review clock starts again. If it hasn’t appeared for three weeks, the student can mark it as done.

How do you run an error log routine in class?

Give it 20 minutes once a week: five to log, ten to review, five to set a target.

  1. Log (5 minutes): students add no more than three mistakes from the latest marked essay or speaking recording.

  2. Review (10 minutes): pairs test each other on entries that are due, covering the corrected column.

  3. Target (5 minutes): each student picks one entry to check for in their next piece of writing.

Keep the logs visible. If students write by hand, a single page in the front of their folder works. Online, a shared spreadsheet per student is enough.

You can also turn the class’s most common entries into a lesson. The Writing Task 2 lesson plan from student mistakes shows one way, and our guide to lesson plans built from learners’ mistakes covers the wider approach.

What are common error log mistakes to avoid?

The most common problems are logging too much, logging without a better version, and never reviewing.

  • Too many entries: three a week is plenty.

  • Rules instead of sentences: “articles” tells the student nothing; the actual sentence does.

  • No better version: without it, the student is just recording failure.

  • No review dates: the log becomes an archive nobody opens.

How can IELTS Laboratory help keep mistakes from coming back?

IELTS Laboratory (ielts-laboratory.co) is an independent online platform for IELTS teachers and learners that turns learners’ own Writing and Speaking mistakes into flashcards, lesson packs and practice. It is not affiliated with IELTS, the British Council, IDP or Cambridge.

A paper or spreadsheet log works well. IELTS Laboratory takes over some of the tracking:

  • Checked corrections become the log. Sol, our AI, turns each Writing mistake into a flashcard with the better version, and you edit, remove or add cards before the learner sees them.

  • The flashcard deck is the review schedule. Cards go into each learner’s own deck, and cards they miss come back sooner.

  • The Mistakes tab ranks a class’s mistakes by damage for any period you choose, and can flag a type of mistake that rose compared with the period before.

  • First and second drafts sit under one report link, so you can see whether a fix held.

Nothing in the product is an official IELTS score, and you stay in charge of what each learner works on.

FAQ

What is an error log in IELTS preparation?

A short table of a student’s own mistakes, each with a better version, a type and a review date. It helps students notice and break repeated habits.

How many mistakes should go in an error log?

Two or three per piece of work. Focus on mistakes that block meaning or hold the writing back, not small slips.

Should the error log include speaking mistakes?

Yes. Note the sentence as the student said it, from a recording if possible, alongside a better version.

How long should students keep an error log?

For the whole course. Entries can be marked done once a mistake hasn’t come back for about three weeks.
